I’m Finn Morgan-Roberts and I usually introduce myself as animator; or stop motion animator, or 3D animator, or animation director; but the truth is that although this is where most of my hard skills lie, this isn’t how I perceive myself.

First and foremost, I’m a filmmaker. All of my creative projects are led by the narrative being constructed, and the context the film is being made for.  For my film Lonely Souls, the emotional message behind the film was supported by the handmade and aesthetic nature of stop motion. Then, for my graduation film Dead Red Kite; the scope of locations, grounded nature of the dialogue, and overall tone of the film, led me to make the film with a hybrid 3D animation workflow.

It’s easy to write a list of software knowledge, hard and soft skills, and say this is the package deal you get if you work with me, but I’d say my strongest characteristic as a human and as a creative, is my commitment to learning, and my approach to problem solving. I make sure I maintain an education into what's emerging in the fast paced world of animation, and learn how to apply these technologies in a wide range of contexts, without damaging or cheapening the finished result. The key to doing this effectively, is knowing the tried and tested workflows and techniques with enough confidence that you’re not relying on flashy new software “magic tricks” to do the hard work that a computer can’t replace.

The truth is that I LOVE animation, but to be truly creative is to be vulnerable, and to do that, you need to talk to people. I spent the first part of my life scared of everything, and finding the confidence to be present and talkative in communication is already the great achievement of my life. All I want is that when people see my work, they emphasise with the vulnerability behind the work, and are moved by the confidence of my communication.
